Snow Report March 3, 2023

I HAVE BEEN TOLD MANY TIMES FROM PEOPLE THAT SKI/SNOWBOARD THE SELKIRK MOUNTAINS IN BC THAT MARCH CAN BE THE BEST MONTH WITH THE MOST SNOWFALL. BELOW IS A QUOTE FROM OUR LEAD GUIDE AT GREAT NORTHERN DAVE OSBORNE

Conditions as of yesterday, March 2.

Probably the best day of skiing i have ever had was yesterday.. 28 cm overnight, Thursday morning heavy snowfall all day with an additional 20 over the day. So a solid 50cm in 30 hrs! Full over the head powder skiing conditions , that doesn't happen often. The guests were blown away with the conditions, SKIING WAS 12 OUT OF 10!!!

A total of 120 cm since Feb 26 with our current storm sitting at 50cm by the end of the day Thursday. Cool temps and good skiing on all asp to valley bottom. Truly as good as it gets right now. Our total height of snow is over 3m settled at 1800m now.

Let the good times roll! Yeah, times are pretty sweet up here lately, with all the essential elements of the weather formula falling into place, and fabulous skiing conditions being the end result. Just cold enough, not much wind, fresh snow every day, and good visibility without any slope-baking sunshine ─ that’s been the formula for sweet turns that just keep improving day after day. As we reap the benefits on classic lines, our biggest concerns are cold teeth and sore cheeks from smiling so much! That’s right, good days are upon us…

We can’t wipe the grins off our faces after a feast of sweet powder skiing over the past week! And there’s more snow in the forecast. Temperatures have been basically ideal ─ cold enough to keep the snow light and dry, without any uncomfortable deep-freeze. Add to all that some excellent visibility to light the way, and you’ve got a perfect recipe for classic powder skiing conditions! That’s right, good days are upon us……

Light! Dry! Powder! Well, unfortunately none of those really apply at the moment. With temperatures hovering on either side of freezing all week, we’re clinging to a few small mercies associated with this past two weeks snowfall – our 67cm fell as snow and not rain. Nonetheless, the daily vote has been that skiing is better than not skiing, and good times haven’t been in short supply! We’re building character run after run, and the long-term forecast calls for a return to more seasonal temperatures and more snow sometime next week. Light? Dry? Powder? Hey, this is Great Northern after all, where that magical combination is never too far over the horizon…
